Electric cars, energy savings, and cultural preservation: Key stories from Gelderland

Rising fuel prices drive electric car adoption, children champion energy savings, and music in Achterhoeks dialect encourages cultural preservation in Gelderland.

Rising fuel prices have pushed residents of Gelderland, Netherlands, to reconsider their transportation habits, leading to a notable increase in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). According to industry groups, interest in EVs, particularly second-hand models, has surged by approximately 60% on major used-car marketplaces in recent weeks. This financial shift is accompanied by a broader push toward energy conservation and cultural preservation across the region.

Electric vehicle adoption fueled by cost savings

The escalating cost of gasoline and diesel has made electric cars a more attractive option to Gelderlanders. With fuel prices now reaching €2.40 per liter, the economic advantages of EVs have become clearer. Conny, a resident of Harderwijk, shared her satisfaction after switching to an electric car. "It's an absolute delight. Driving is comfortable, and I’ve saved a significant amount of money. I no longer need to visit the fuel station."

Driving an electric vehicle offers lower costs per kilometer. Charging at home using solar panels averages around €0.06 per kilometer, while public charging costs range from €0.09 to €0.10. In contrast, fueling a gasoline-powered car costs approximately €0.15 per kilometer. This cost efficiency is particularly impactful for people who travel frequently, whether for work or leisure. As Conny puts it, "Considering how many kilometers we cover, especially during vacations, the savings add up. Beyond that, we generate our own electricity at home, which is another major advantage."

The trend toward electric vehicles is more apparent in the used car market, where affordability plays a significant role. The rising interest in second-hand EVs not only relieves demand pressures on new models but also accelerates adoption among cost-conscious consumers.

Schools and children lead energy-saving efforts

Energy conservation isn't just a household matter—it’s also gaining traction among the youngest residents of Gelderland. At De Leeuw elementary school in Lichtenvoorde, students are participating in a competition to implement energy-saving measures both at school and at home. The initiative has students placing radiator insulation, sealing drafts, taking shorter showers, and even recycling water for tasks like flushing toilets.

One student explained how water runoff from handwashing is reused: "When we wash our hands, the water is collected to flush the toilet or clean bicycles." These initiatives aim to instill lifelong habits and make a broader impact. Students express hope that their actions will inspire the rest of the country—and even the world. The school with the best energy-saving performance earns a field trip and the chance to build their own robot, further motivating children to engage in sustainable practices.

Cultural preservation through language and music

In a different vein, two musicians from Harreveld have taken steps to preserve the Achterhoeks dialect through children’s songs. Their project, "De Donderjagers," was born from a desire to create relatable and educational content in the local dialect. "We’re making new songs with fresh melodies and lyrics specifically in our dialect. It’s important to keep this part of our heritage alive," one of the musicians explained.

The project aims to counter a growing sense of detachment from local dialects among younger generations. In an increasingly bilingual society influenced by English, dialects like Achterhoeks risk being marginalized. By embedding the dialect into fun, musical experiences, the project not only entertains but also strengthens cultural ties.

Active aging through dance

Riet, an 86-year-old from Duiven, exemplifies the benefits of staying active in later years. Riet has been line dancing for 20 years and now teaches beginners in her community. "You could sit back at this age, but dancing keeps the body and mind fit," she says. Riet’s group doesn’t just focus on steps—they foster social connections, offering meaningful engagement in the lives of many retirees.

Environmental disputes and legal challenges

Another issue brewing in the region is the conflict between environmental groups and the provincial government over mountain biking trails in nature areas. Organizations like Das & Boom argue that the trails disrupt ecosystems, harming protected species by disturbing their habitats or causing accidental deaths. While the province acknowledges the risks, it asserts that measures are in place to mitigate harm. The case is now headed to court, with a ruling expected within eight weeks.

Local governance controversies

In the political arena, Doesburg faces tension following the latest municipal elections. Despite an earlier recount confirming that the final seat was awarded to a joint GroenLinks-PvdA candidate, the Stadspartij has demanded another review. While local election officials insist that the process was conducted correctly, the affair highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining trust in electoral systems. For now, the seat remains with GroenLinks-PvdA.

Looking ahead

From rising EV adoption to energy-saving education and cultural preservation, Gelderland is adapting to modern challenges in practical and creative ways. The court decision regarding mountain bike trails and the outcome of the Doesburg recount are poised to shape future developments in the region. Meanwhile, projects like sustainable schools and community-driven activities provide models for balancing economic, environmental, and cultural priorities.
