Highlights from the 2026 Melbourne Motor Show: Bold Concepts and Electric Evolution

From MG's luxurious IM LS9 to Honda's hybrid Prelude, the 2026 Melbourne Motor Show showcased bold innovations and game-changing EVs.

The 2026 Melbourne Motor Show showcased a fascinating mix of bold new vehicle concepts, luxurious family haulers, and innovative EVs. From ultra-premium lineups to affordable, compact EVs, the event left no doubt that global automakers see the Australian market as ripe for both experimentation and expansion. Here are the standouts from this year’s show.

MG's IM LS9: Blurring the Line Between Premium and Super Luxury

Leading the headlines was MG’s IM LS9, a flagship electric range-extended SUV that was hard to miss on the show floor. While IM, MG’s luxury sub-brand, is currently exclusive to China, the manufacturer is considering launching this six-figure vehicle in Australia.

This behemoth boasts a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol generator to extend its electric range, managing a staggering 1,500 kilometers on a full charge. However, unlike traditional hybrids, the engine never powers the wheels directly. From its rose gold interiors to deep tissue “4D” massaging seats, fluffy headrest pillows, and 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, the LS9’s attention to luxury was evident.

On the tech front, the SUV features English-language interfaces on its numerous screens, including a passenger-dedicated secondary display. The vehicle’s nearly 10-meter turning radius, enabled by four-wheel steering, offers surprising agility for a model exceeding 5 meters in length.

But the big question—will Australians shell out super-luxury prices for an MG? That, it seems, depends on whether enough interest is shown during this ongoing showcase. If the brand receives strong feedback, the IM LS9 could hit Australian roads by late 2026.

Honda Prelude: Nostalgia Meets Modern Hybrid Tech

Another highly anticipated debut was Honda’s revival of the beloved Prelude. However, it looks very different from the sporty coupe Australians remember from decades past. Priced at $65,000 drive-away, the new hybrid Prelude aims to carve out premium space in a territory dominated by more affordable rivals like the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ.

With a two-liter naturally aspirated hybrid engine borrowing heavily from the Civic’s hybrid powertrain, this Prelude isn’t about high-octane performance. Instead, it delivers mild torque improvements and efficiency gains suitable for modern commuters. Notably, there’s no VTEC roar or manual transmission in sight—a move likely to polarize die-hard fans.

Honda is counting on the car’s sleek design, sporty 20-inch wheels, and Brembo brakes to leave an impression. Inside, the vehicle delivers plush comfort, high-quality leather, and user-friendly tech. Honda’s gamble? The combination of nostalgia and sophistication to justify its high cost. However, the lack of a manual gearbox and the hybrid focus may alienate motorsport purists.

Geely EX2: Affordable EV That Could Dominate Australia’s Compact Segment

For EV enthusiasts, the Geely EX2 offered a more economical vision of the future. This sub-$30,000 electric hatchback packs impressive features, signaling Geely’s intent to take on the local compact EV market.

One of the EX2’s significant advantages lies in its rear-wheel-drive setup, ensuring engaging dynamics uncommon in the segment. Its modestly sized, liquid-cooled battery also tackles thermal challenges better than similar small EVs, hinting at improved longevity and range efficiency.

The interior feels thoughtfully designed for its price point, offering surprising material quality and modern touches like a large 14.6-inch central infotainment system paired with an 8.8-inch driver display. Passengers also benefit from reasonable rear legroom, despite the car’s small dimensions. With a predicted price hovering under $28,000, the Geely EX2 could attract first-time EV adopters or budget-conscious city drivers. The Australian launch is pegged for late 2026.

Revised BYD Shark Range: Ute Evolution for Every Need

In the Ute segment, the BYD Shark lineup showcased its versatility with three distinct models: the regular version, the high-performance model, and a new cab chassis variant. The no-frills cab chassis edition starts at $55,900 and is explicitly designed for tradies and fleet buyers.

Though stripped back in features compared to its high-powered siblings, the cab chassis still houses serious electric muscle. The hybrid configuration combines a turbocharged generator and twin electric motors to deliver 321 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque, making even this workhorse accelerate from 0-100 km/h in under six seconds.

Meanwhile, the higher-end performance model captures attention with its ability to tow 3.5 tons and enhanced power output. With BYD continuing to lead innovation in the plugin Ute scene, these models prove the Shark range has something for every buyer in its sights.

The Big Picture: Where the Melbourne Motor Show Leaves Us

This year’s show was a microcosm of the global trends redefining the automotive industry: the electrification of everything from compact cars to heavy-duty work vehicles, the convergence of tech and luxury even in entry-level offerings, as well as manufacturers’ increasing confidence to experiment with bold ideas in established markets.

The vehicles presented at the 2026 Melbourne Motor Show differed significantly in price, purpose, and scope, yet all shared one vision: adaptability to shifting market demands. From the aspirational luxury of MG’s IM LS9 to the nostalgia-driven refinement of Honda’s Prelude and Geely’s accessible electrification, the industry’s directions are varied yet interconnected.

As 2026 progresses, it will be interesting to watch how quickly these vehicles arrive on Australia’s roads—and what impact they have on their respective market segments.
