VinFast VF MPV 7: The New Seven-Seater Electric Vehicle Challenges the Indian Market

Vietnam's VinFast debuts its third electric vehicle, the VF MPV 7, in India aiming to compete in the growing electric MPV segment with its impressive range and unique features.
The demand for multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) is steadily growing in India, especially in the electric vehicle (EV) space. Vietnamese automaker VinFast has introduced its newest challenger, the VF MPV 7, to the Indian market, setting its sights on a competitive niche that includes offerings like the Kia Carens EV, BYD EMX7, and Mahindra XUV 9S. This launch marks the company’s third electric vehicle, following the VinFast VF6 and VF7, which debuted in India just a year ago.
A New Competitor in the Electric MPV Segment
VinFast, though a relatively new player in the global automotive arena, has aggressively positioned itself as a brand offering strong value propositions to its customers. The VF6 and VF7 established the company’s commitment to affordability and utility. With the VF MPV 7, VinFast continues this trend by targeting Indian families and fleet operators who prioritize space, comfort, and long-term value.
The VF MPV 7 has dimensions that push it firmly into the large MPV category. The vehicle is 4740 mm long, with a wheelbase of approximately 2800 mm, ensuring ample interior space across three rows. While MPVs are traditionally known for their bulk, VinFast has designed this electric model to provide comfort for all three rows of passengers while retaining practicality.
Design and Exterior Features
VinFast MPVs are known for their simple yet recognizable designs, characterized by a chrome-accented front logo and a prominent V-shaped daytime running light (DRL) layout. The VF MPV 7 doesn’t stray from this formula. The front features understated styling, with small grille openings to cool the battery pack and a focus on functional elegance.
The side profile reveals 19-inch alloy wheels with a unique design not often seen in electric vehicles—a detail sure to draw attention. The charging port uses the CCS Type 2 connector, capable of supporting up to 80 kW DC fast charging. This allows the battery to charge from 10% to 70% in just 30 minutes, according to VinFast, making it well-suited for long trips.
At the rear, the design maintains symmetry with connected LED tail lamps in a V-shape. Practical elements like a rear glass defogger, wiper, and washer further enhance utility. Despite the seven-seater configuration, the cargo space is limited to 126 liters with all seats in use, but folding the third and second rows can extend the boot space up to 1080 liters, making it a versatile vehicle.
Interior Comfort and Space
The VF MPV 7’s interiors are designed with families in mind. The cabin features two available themes: a full-black finish or a dual-tone leather combination in brown and white. The dashboard is clean and modern, emphasizing simplicity and utility.
While the second row offers generous legroom, headroom, and adjustable reclining angles, taller passengers may find the third-row seats less comfortable for extended trips. However, the inclusion of features like air conditioning vents, cup holders, and grab handles in the third row highlight VinFast’s effort to maximize passenger comfort in all seating positions.
The driver’s seat comes with six-way manual adjustability, while the center console hosts a floating design with a 10.1-inch infotainment system. Interestingly, VinFast has integrated both driver and infotainment functions into this central display, eliminating a traditional digital driver’s display. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, vehicle status, navigation, and other essential controls are all operated from this centralized screen.
Performance and Battery Specifications
Under the hood, the VF MPV 7 is powered by a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) generating 204 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque, providing a smooth yet powerful driving experience. The top speed of the vehicle is limited to 140 km/h, with a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of under 9 seconds.
The vehicle draws power from a 60.13 kWh battery pack, which VinFast claims delivers an impressive range of 517 km per the ARAI certification. While real-world range may vary based on driving conditions, these figures position the VF MPV 7 as a strong contender in its class. As mentioned earlier, fast-charging capabilities enable practical recharging during long trips.
Warranty and Ownership Benefits
New brands in the automotive market often offer extended warranties and benefits to build trust, and VinFast is no different. The VF MPV 7 comes with an extensive package that includes a 10-year battery warranty, a 7-year vehicle warranty, and 3 years of free maintenance. Remarkably, even the suspension system has a 5-year warranty, and the paint is covered under a 7-year warranty.
Additionally, VinFast is promoting a buy-back guarantee, assuring up to 70% of the resale value within 2–5 years. First-time buyers can also benefit from a 3% loyalty bonus if they purchase a second VinFast vehicle. For the next three years, customers can enjoy free charging at select partnered stations across India.
Missing Features: Cost-Cutting or Optimization?
While the VF MPV 7 impresses with its range, design, and price, there are notable omissions. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and 360-degree cameras are absent, features commonly found in competitors within the same price range. The lack of ventilated seats and minimalistic safety features, such as four airbags, might also deter safety-conscious buyers. These exclusions may be part of VinFast’s strategy to keep costs low and appeal to budget-conscious Indian buyers.
Pricing and Market Position
The VinFast VF MPV 7 is priced at Rs. 24.49 lakhs (ex-showroom), which includes all warranty packages and road assistance services. These competitive price points position the vehicle as an attractive option for Indian families looking to switch to an electric MPV without overspending.
Looking Ahead
VinFast has made significant strides in establishing itself in the Indian EV market. With attractive benefits, dependable warranty policies, and a focus on practical design, the VF MPV 7 is a strong competitor to existing electric MPVs. However, its long-term success will depend on how effectively it can meet buyers’ expectations in real-world scenarios. The road ahead for VinFast in India may hinge on its ability to build brand trust and deliver consistent performance.
