San Antonio tackles school leadership, safety concerns, and Spurs momentum

San Antonio is buzzing with updates on its school district's superintendent search, neighborhood safety, and the Spurs' playoff excitement.

San Antonio residents kicked off the week tackling critical updates on community leadership, neighborhood safety, and some thrilling basketball news. Here’s what’s shaping conversations in the Alamo City:

Superintendent Search for SAISD

The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), one of the city's largest, is actively seeking community input in the process to hire a new superintendent. This follows the announcement by current superintendent Dr. Jaime Aquino that he will retire in early 2024. Aquino, who has served nearly five years in the role, cited family commitments as the reason behind his decision.

Starting today, residents can provide their opinions through a ten-minute survey hosted by the district. Questions include what characteristics the new superintendent should embody, whether they should be bilingual, and what strategic goals should be prioritized in the district’s future leadership.

Additionally, the first public input town hall takes place tonight at 6 PM at SAISD headquarters on Quincy Street. Interested individuals can participate in person or virtually. The formal application process for the superintendent position begins May 4, and the district aims to finalize the hire over summer.

This transparency is seen as a step toward fostering trust between SAISD and its broader community, as successful schools are not only fundamental to students but also essential for the city’s economic and residential appeal.

Safety Concerns in Preston Hollow

Nearly a week after two devastating home explosions on Preston Hollow Drive shook the community, neighbors are still looking for answers. Over the weekend, District 10 Councilman Marc White met with affected residents, ensuring them that investigations are ongoing. While the explosion caused six homes to remain evacuated, with many families staying in temporary accommodations such as Airbnbs, White emphasized support.

“We now have a designated point of contact with CPS Energy to schedule gas line inspections for anyone that requests one in the neighborhood,” White said. However, there is currently no definitive timeline for residents to return to their homes, as structural evaluations are still pending.

Residents can voice concerns directly during CPS Energy’s board meeting, set for later today. Public comments will be allowed, though pre-registration is required either online by 12:30 PM or in person between noon and 12:30 PM. This meeting will also be live-streamed for broader accessibility.

Spurs' Playoff Push

The San Antonio Spurs are riding high after securing a pivotal third win against the Portland Trailblazers in the NBA playoffs. With a 3-1 series lead, the team is one victory away from advancing to the next round. Fans were delighted by Victor Wembanyama’s stellar return following NBA concussion protocols, which had sidelined him during Game 3.

Wembanyama, who scored 27 points and snagged 12 rebounds in Game 4, expressed mixed emotions post-game, praising team doctors but criticizing the protocols surrounding his clearance to play. “The way the situation was handled was very disappointing. I’ll go into details after the season,” he noted.

Nevertheless, the Spurs faithful have plenty to celebrate. Local businesses sweetened the victory with freebies: free drip coffee at a Southtown café, free tacos between 6–9 AM, and even free conchas for early risers across various locations. It’s a small but spirited gesture to keep the city energized for the series ahead.

Weather Update: Heat First, Rain Later

It’s a scorcher today in San Antonio, with highs predicted to reach a sweltering 92°F and heat indices nearing 100°F. While today’s chance of rain remains low, Wednesday could see a 30% likelihood of storms, bolstered by a frontal boundary moving across the region. Weather models suggest Friday might bring even more rain, providing a much-needed cooldown to end the week.

Justin Horne, a meteorologist, also highlighted that April 2026 could break regional records for rainfall levels depending on this week’s activity, making it one of San Antonio’s wettest months in recent years.

Traffic Notes

Commuters on the northeast side of town woke up to improved conditions as major construction at Loop 1604 near Nacogdoches has cleared up. However, traffic remains sluggish on parts of I-35 northbound near Randolph Boulevard, with speeds hovering around 20 mph.

All drivers should remain cautious near a reported vehicle disablement on U.S. Highway 90 at the State Highway 151 interchange.

Fiesta’s Big Finish

Wrapping up Fiesta, San Antonio’s beloved 10-day celebration, this past weekend’s parades left a memorable mark—not least for one couple who tied the knot during the Fiesta Flambeau Parade. With floats and festive lights as their backdrop, JoAnn and Juan made their wedding vows, turning the parade into a moment of shared joy for the city.

As Fiesta fades into the rearview, San Antonians turn their focus to the critical community issues ahead. From school district leadership to energy accountability and NBA glory, there’s no shortage of passionate discussions in the Alamo City.
