Essentia Health prepares to launch state-of-the-art orthopedic center in Baxter

Essentia Health is nearing completion on a cutting-edge orthopedic center in Baxter, set to enhance mobility-focused care for the Brainerd Lakes area.
Essentia Health is preparing to significantly enhance healthcare accessibility and innovation in the Brainerd Lakes area with the near-completion of its new orthopedic center in Baxter. Designed to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the community, the facility is being hailed as a transformative addition to the region’s medical infrastructure.
The state-of-the-art facility spans 124,000 square feet in total, with 65,000 square feet dedicated to patient care from the outset. Featuring 72 exam rooms and six procedure rooms, the center is poised to streamline and expand mobility-focused healthcare services in the region, addressing both immediate needs and long-term demands. "Everybody is ready to move out of construction and into actual patient care," a spokesperson noted during an event covering the progress.
Specialized services for a growing need
As the population ages—particularly Baby Boomers—maintaining mobility has become an increasingly common concern. Whether it's the ability to stay active with age or recover efficiently from an injury, the mission of Essentia's orthopedic center is to provide comprehensive care. The facility plans to serve the community by offering consultations, podiatry services, interventional pain care, and sports medicine, among other specialties. Diagnostic imaging, urgent care, and rehabilitation services are also integral components of the center.
The facility even includes Baxter's first drive-through pharmacy, simplifying access to prescriptions for patients in need of both convenience and efficiency. This innovative approach to community care highlights a growing trend in healthcare to integrate modern conveniences without sacrificing quality.
A focus on active aging and athletics
The center’s offerings are designed for a broad demographic—from aging adults concerned about staying mobile to young athletes rehabilitating from sports injuries. For those over the age of 65, when orthopedic healthcare needs typically increase, the center aims to provide tailored solutions that keep them both mobile and independent. "Not only am I going to age gracefully, but I will age actively," one affiliated staff member stated in discussing the importance of the center’s mission.
At the other end of the spectrum, the center has made notable investments in sports medicine and rehabilitation programs, ensuring that high school athletes receive specialized guidance for recovering from injuries. Whether it’s a football player battling a torn ligament or a volleyball enthusiast hoping to return to action quickly, the facility is equipped to deliver care that helps patients get back into the game.
Future-proofing community healthcare
Interestingly, Essentia has taken a future-oriented approach with this project. While 65,000 square feet of the site are currently built out for immediate use, there is an additional "shelf space" on the north side, allocated for forthcoming program expansions. This additional space will allow Essentia to continually adapt to the community’s needs as healthcare evolves, whether that involves increasing treatment capacity or integrating new technologies into the program.
"When we reach 65, we consume more healthcare, and a lot of that revolves around orthopedics, keeping people mobile and active," remarked a representative from the organization. The space and technology in Baxter's orthopedic center have been chosen explicitly to meet these escalating demands.
Building a healthcare legacy in Baxter
The construction of this center reflects progress not only in healthcare but also in how organizations are actively addressing the specific needs of their populations. As mobility challenges remain relevant across all age groups, Essentia Health’s orthopedic center is expected to serve as a model of innovation and community-driven medical care. With its combination of cutting-edge treatments and practical services like a drive-through pharmacy and rehabilitation programs, the facility is a comprehensive solution for a diverse patient base.
While the official opening date is still on the horizon, the excitement surrounding the center’s completion is palpable. Once operational, it will bring new opportunities for recovery, maintenance, and growth to the Brainerd Lakes area—a long-needed investment in the health and well-being of its residents.
