Rebecca Schmitt wins 2026 IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon

Rebecca Schmitt won the women's division of the 2026 IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon with a time of 1:10:16, a personal best. She overcame a previous DNF and celebrated with burger, fries, and the Speedway Museum.
Rebecca Schmitt crossed the finish line first in the women's division of the 2026 IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon with a time of 1 hour, 10 minutes, and 16 seconds. The result marks a personal best for the Albuquerque-based runner, who had been hesitant about racing the half marathon distance after a previous attempt at sea level ended in a DNF.
Schmitt, primarily a marathoner, said she was nervous coming into the race. "I'm a marathoner, have run one half marathon at sea level, was trying to go for a fast time, ended up DNFing, and so I've been a little hesitant about the half marathon," she told reporters after the race. "I'm just really grateful to [the organizers] for putting on such a great race and making it a day where a lot of us could run really fast."
Schmitt credited the day's success to the group she ran with, including her training partner and a pack of local runners from Indianapolis. "It was just like a great atmosphere and vibe, and everybody was really nice, ran together, worked together," she said. "It was a really good day." She also praised the crowd support, noting that people cheered the entire route and that school groups at cheer stations added to the energy.
The IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon is one of the largest half marathons in the United States, drawing thousands of participants each year as part of the broader Indianapolis 500 Festival. The course winds through downtown Indianapolis and finishes on the track of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a unique experience that many runners cite as a highlight.
Schmitt described that moment on the track as emotional. "There was a moment there where I got chills and just thought, I feel so grateful and lucky to be able to do this," she said.
Looking ahead after the win, Schmitt planned a classic celebration: burger and fries, followed by a visit to the Speedway Museum. The interviewer asked if she would return to defend her title next year, and Schmitt expressed appreciation for the opportunity. "We're glad you gave it another chance after your last [race] at sea level didn't go as you had hoped," the interviewer said. "We hope we see you back here next year defending your title." Schmitt responded, "Thanks so much, Indianapolis."
Schmitt's victory comes as the half marathon distance continues to grow in popularity among competitive runners who typically focus on the marathon. Her willingness to return to a distance that had previously humbled her, and to set a new personal record on a famously flat and fast course, underscores the value of persistence. For Schmitt, the result also reinforces that racing with a supportive group and a strong atmosphere can make the difference between a DNF and a PR.
The 2026 IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon took place on a cool, clear morning in Indianapolis, conditions that likely contributed to fast times across the field. Organizers reported strong participation numbers, though full results were still being tallied at the time of Schmitt's interview.
