TCS Health Insurance Scheme (HIS) Explained: Plans, Benefits, Claims, and Enrollment

An in-depth look at TCS Health Insurance Scheme covering eligibility, plans, benefits, and key limitations for employees.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of the largest IT companies, offers its employees the Health Insurance Scheme (HIS), a comprehensive plan designed to provide financial support for medical expenses. Whether you're a current employee, new hire, or someone eyeing a TCS role, understanding the details of HIS can help you take full advantage of the program. This article breaks down the HIS plans, eligibility, key benefits, and limitations while explaining the enrollment and claims processes.

What is TCS Health Insurance Scheme?

The TCS Health Insurance Scheme (HIS) is a group health insurance plan offered in partnership with an external insurance provider (currently New Assurance) and managed by a third-party administrator (TPA) called Medi Assist. HIS provides two main coverage types:

  1. Hospitalization Cover: Covers expenses during hospital admissions for employees and eligible dependents.
  2. Domiciliary Cover: Includes outpatient treatments, home-based care, and even dental treatments.

The policy operates on a financial year basis, running from April 1 to March 31.

Who is Eligible for HIS?

Eligibility for HIS includes:

  • Full-time employees of TCS India, TCS ESER International, and specific other divisions.
  • Global employees with eligible dependents residing in India.
  • Dependents such as spouses and up to three children (fully covered by TCS).

Coverage remains active throughout your tenure with TCS but ends immediately on your last working day.

HIS Plans: A Tiered System

TCS offers multiple insurance plans based on employee grades or bands:

  • Silver Plan: Basic coverage for entry-level employees.
  • Gold Plan: The default plan for most employees.
  • Gold Plus Plan: Enhanced benefits.
  • Platinum Plan: Advanced coverage.
  • Platinum Plus Plan: Premium coverage for employees at grade C5 and above.

Upgrading Your Plan

You can upgrade your plan, but only during the annual enrollment window (March-April). Upgrades are limited to two levels above your default plan. For example, employees with the Gold Plan can move to Gold Plus or Platinum. However, Platinum Plus is not upgradable as it's grade-specific.

Important: Once you upgrade, you are locked into the higher plan for three years, regardless of circumstances. Plan carefully.

Who Pays for HIS?

TCS fully pays the premium for:

  • The employee.
  • Spouse.
  • Up to three children.

For additional dependents, including parents and in-laws, you must cover the premium. These additional costs depend on the age of the insured and are deducted from your monthly payroll (in up to eight installments for parent premiums). Note that GST applies to all premiums, and refunds are not available once paid.

Key Benefits of HIS

The HIS program offers several advantages that make it a valuable benefit for TCS employees:

  1. Comprehensive Coverage: Self, spouse, and up to three children are fully insured by TCS.
  2. Hospitalization and Domiciliary Care: Coverage extends to both inpatient and outpatient treatments, including dental work.
  3. Life Event Modifications: New family members (after marriage or childbirth) can be added within 90 days, with coverage backdated.
  4. Unpaid Leave Coverage: Continues even during leave without pay; premiums are deducted when you resume work or during final settlement.
  5. Post-Retirement Continuity: You can retain HIS after retiring by paying full premiums yourself.
  6. Income Tax Benefits: Premiums paid for parents and plan upgrades may qualify for tax deductions under applicable laws.
  7. Ease of Management: Enrollment and claim processing are managed through TCS’s digital platforms like Ultimatix and the Maven app.

Limitations and Rules

Despite its merits, HIS comes with restrictions:

  1. Strict Enrollment Window: Changes can only be made during the annual window in March-April.
  2. Plan Lock-in Period: Upgrades have a three-year lock-in.
  3. Delayed Parent Enrollment: Late parent additions result in a three-year lock-in and a one-year waiting period for regular claims (critical illnesses are covered).
  4. No Dual Coverage: TCS couples cannot insure each other or dependents under two separate HIS policies.
  5. Child Age Restrictions: Children above 25 years, married, or employed are ineligible.
  6. Premium Non-Refundable: Deducted premiums are non-refundable, even if coverage ends prematurely.
  7. Immediate Termination Upon Resignation: Coverage ends on your last working day with no grace period.

Enrollment Process

Enrolling in HIS is straightforward and can be completed in a few steps via Ultimatix:

  1. Access the ‘Benefits and Tax’ section under Global ESS in Ultimatix. Click on ‘Health Insurance Scheme’ to begin.
  2. Declare if any family member also works at TCS (dual coverage is not allowed).
  3. Update beneficiary details by adding names, relationships, and birth dates. If enrolling a spouse for the first time, update marital status under ‘My Profile’ beforehand.
  4. Review the calculated premium based on your chosen plan and enrolled dependents.
  5. Confirm and submit the application. The last saved submission before the window closes is final.

Filing Claims

  • Cashless Claims: If admitted to a network hospital, show your e-card. The hospital coordinates with Medi Assist for approvals.
  • Reimbursement Claims: Pay upfront and file claims through Ultimatix for reimbursement.

Deadlines for filing claims:

  • Hospitalization: Within 90 days of discharge.
  • OPD: Within 90 days of expense.
  • End of year: All claims must be filed by April 30. Late submissions are not accepted.

Special Scenarios

  • Resignation: File pending claims before your last day.
  • Continuing Insurance Post Employment: Obtain a policy continuation letter via Ultimatix and contact the insurance provider to continue coverage.
  • Retirement: You can opt for full premium payment to retain coverage in retirement.

Final Thoughts

The TCS Health Insurance Scheme is a comprehensive benefit that covers a broad range of medical expenses and offers considerable perks like full coverage for immediate family members and tax benefits. However, employees must be mindful of its strict rules, such as lock-in periods and non-refundable premiums. Proper understanding and timely enrollment can ensure you make the most of this valuable employee benefit.
