That response is the whole story. Most companies add a speaker when they want a controller to make noise. Valve looked at the parts already inside the device, the haptic motors meant to buzz and thump, and asked whether those parts could sing. They can, if you drive them at the right frequencies.

The physics is straightforward. Every vibrating object pushes the air around it, and that push is sound. Most haptic motors vibrate at low frequencies, so you feel them through your hands rather than hearing them with your ears. Push the frequency up and the boundary between a buzz and a tone blurs. That is the entire appeal of an easter egg. Call it what it is: a private joke between the people who made a thing and the people who care enough to look closely at it. There is a broader lesson here for anyone who makes hardware or software. The details people remember are rarely the ones in the marketing materials. They are the moments of personality, the choices that serve no obvious purpose but make a product feel like it was made by humans. Valve's decision to turn a missing speaker into a hidden feature is the difference between a component and a signature. Rather than ship a controller with a hole where audio should be, Valve shipped one with a secret in it.

The easter egg is small, hidden, and completely unnecessary. That is exactly why it is worth talking about. Valve built a controller with no speakers and found a way to make it talk anyway. The only people who will ever hear it are the ones who take the time to ask.
